Well-Being in the Digital Age
Psychology From The East The West
Digital age is the period where digital technologies play a prominent role in shaping up and regulating the behaviors, performances, standards, etc., of societies, communities, organizations, and individuals (Liyanage, 2012). People need skills adapted to a digital world, including technical and social skills, and digital literacy (OECD, 2019). For instance, the impact of AI, social media, and technology will greatly reduce face-to-face contact, and changes in human behavior in the learning process/education, work, and social lives.
This technological advancement accelerates us to a more complete transformation towards a network society and creates opportunities/challenges for well-being. Would these conditions improve or worsen our well-being? Well-being can be indicated by positive emotion, engagement, positive relationships, meaning, and accomplishments/achievements. Related Sub-themes Include :
- Issues in education and human development
Technological advancement brought us significant alterations in educational settings and human development issues. We are now aware of the transformation from the traditional to digital lives, as we are increasingly being assisted by novel educational tools and technologies. Digitization of education brings those who are far in proximity closer, enable easier interactions, as well as introducing newer methods of learning. In addition, the digital era requires digital literacy skills from various parties to navigate the changes in learning process/education, while also maintaining the well-being. Digital lives such as use of gadget, social media etc., also influences how parents raise their children and individuals achieve their developmental tasks. How do these changes impact well-being? What are the relationships between psychology and these issues? This track broadly focused on the educational psychology and human lifespan development issues.
- Social lives, health psychology, and mental health
During the rapid development of digital technology, significant life alterations brought changes to individuals and impacted interpersonal social lives. In this digital era, loneliness, anxiety, depression, as well as other various mental health issues arise. Within this track, we accept abstracts that are broadly focused on how the digital era may impact mental health and psychological well-being. We also highlight several interpersonal, community, and social psychological issues that may contribute to people’s mental health and well-being during this digital era.
- Work and organizational psychology
Due to the changes in the nature of work, organizations are also under pressure to pursue digitalization. A survey conducted by PwC Global Digital IQ Survey, McKinsey Global Survey, and IDC FutureScape (2023) showed that 89% of the companies have already adopted a digital-first business strategy. With the new transformation, digital workplace is not an option anymore, it becomes a necessity. Digitalization at work, such as hybrid work and teleworking can serve as job resources and positively influence employee mental health, or as job challenge that negatively influence employee mental health. We invite research pertaining issues of workplace digitalization and employee well-being in the conference
- Social discourse and political issues
Politics and psychological well-being are closely connected, and it is important to understand the impact that politics can have on an individual’s mental health. For example, political instability and insecurity can lead to feelings of anxiety and stress, while social policies that promote equality and social justice can enhance feelings of well-being and reduce stress levels. Moreover, Political leaders can play a critical role in creating policies and programs that support mental health services and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness. In addition, this year of presidential election campaign for Indonesian politics may affect psychological well-being of the citizens in various ways. Therefore, it is crucial to recognize the importance of political decisions on psychological well-being and work towards creating policies and practices that promote mental health and well-being for all individuals. In this subtopic, participants are invited to present their paper on the many dimensions of interrelationships between politics and well-being, including prejudice and stigma, minority-majority identity relationships, political partisanships, power relations in the society, policy recommendations for help-seeking behavior, and many more.
- Macro perspectives that influence the psychological dimensions of well-being
How can people maintain their well-being in this digital era? In this track, we invite abstracts which discuss the influence of macro-perspective factors such as cultures, sociological structures and networks, economic determinants, environmental impact, evolutionary forces (and many more) on human psychology. This track broadly focuses on the notion of how human can maintain their well-being in today’s society, with regard to these underlying factors.
